VIKING VOCABULARY:
Flax: threads from the stem of the flax plant, used to make linen
Berserker: Norman warrior
Jarl: Important chief / duke, part of Viking society
Runes: one of the letters in an alphabet that people in northern Europe used in ancient times and cut into wood or stone
Raid: a short surprise attack on an enemy by soldiers
Saga: a long traditional story about adventures and brave acts, especially one from Norway or Iceland
"The thing": Important Viking meeting
Erik the Red: The one who discovered Greenland. He had red hair
Alfred the Great: Stopped Viking raids
Leif Erikson: The Viking who discovered America
Tunic: a loose piece of clothing covering the body down to the knees, usually without arms
Saint Vladimir: Embraced Christianity
Turf: Viking controlled territory
Longship: a long narrow ship used by the Vikings
Longhouse: an old type of house in which people and animals lived together
Valhalla: a place in which some chosen men who had died in battle went to live with the god Odin forever
